The way the cover is done here with a line to painted technique, Fred would often do a cover with a somewhat under painting look and then go to a more complete rendering and detailed finish. I wonder if this was something he came up with to help him meet deadline. He uses burnt umber often and in oils it is one of the faster drying colors. On later covers he will do variations of this technique. Detailed foreground and middle ground and a wash background. It made an effective finished product that he could make stand out and pop.
This is another very different and intersting painting. I like where it goes from drawing to finished portions.
The painting also contradicts the harsh title of "The Rape" by having the woman appear that she is in rapture. The comments above the book title make everything very confusing as to what the book is actually about. I have not read this one yet.
But another great Pfeiffer find with a bold signature on the work.
