Fred Pfeiffer : The Hawaiians - One Sheet - 1970

Recently found one sheet by Fred for the
motion picture The Hawaiians.

Charlton Heston and the group of people around him
all have that Pfeiffer look to them as well as their
clothes and the palm trees and the ships sails
We can thank the article in the Illustration
Magazine and a post on the Doc Savage
Yahoo group "Flea Run" for this picture coming to us.

An intersting coincidence on this.

On Friday, Feb. 4, the Coming Attractions website mentioned that Illustration Magazine #32 had just come out and featured a story on Ed Balcourt. I had been looking for this story because Illustration had mentioned that a future issue would carry an article on Balcourt. Through Bob Larkin, I knew that Balcourt had represented Fred at one time, and Bob also.

You can peruse an issue on the Illustration website, and I looked through the article and saw what looked like a Pfeiffer illo. When I increased the reading pane, it was! There is a brief paragraph dedicated to Pfeiffer where Balcourt mentions that Fred had done many movie posters through him, and to take a look at "Hawaii" for all the intricacies.

"Hawaii" came out in 1966 and the poster really could have been done by anybody, including Fred.

Scotty asked if I looked at the poster mentioned on Flea Run on the same day, and he said it looked Pfeiffer-ish. When he said it was from the movie "The Hawaiians", I jumped to look at it. Sure enough, Balcourt had made a slight mistake (he is 88), and based on various elements in the poster, I can confidently say that it was done by Pfeiffer.

A lot of strange coincidences happening all at the same time.

Yes...that title, THE HAWAIIANS brings back to me a memory of my Aunt Millie (Fred's mother) proudly boasting to the family about Fred's movie poster art, and citing this one as being by Fred, although I personally seem to recall this art being on a book cover. But, I definitely remember that title now, THE HAWAIIANS, in association with Fred's art.
