The paper she is holding in her hand has a different flame going than on the other cover. I wonder if Fred modified the painting blocking out the other elements and putting the larger flame on it.
I liked the other flame-on-paper design better than this one. In any case, I'm wondering if this was another of those covers where he was asked by someone to do the design a certain way, and subsequently added that bold red coloring in the foreground as a way of making a rather mundane design more noticeable.
Jerry Counihan told me that Fred was a perfectionist. He said he came to pick up Fred one day for lunch and a painting was there on an easel. Jerry said "that is really great", but Fred ended up wiping the painting away and starting over because he wasn't satisfied with it.
Jerry told Fred "why did you do that, the painting was wonderful!"
