Really spectacular portrait work here. Fred had art muscle that he never even flexed. He was so damn good it blows my mind. Another one I would love to see in person.
I totally agree! A great portrait, and one that still reminds me of what I've staunchly believed for over 37 years, namely that Fred could've made far more money as a portrait painter. I told him that in '73 on the strength of how well he painted that picture of Mercedes, but he just laughed off the suggestion as though he either didn't believe he was good enough... or didn't believe the field of portraiture was lucrative enough.
Fred's painting style was the kind that lent itself so well to the art of portraiture. His choice of colors and talent at blending them so compatibly made him a natural for that type of art. I truly believe he would've succeeded in a big way as a portraitist.
