I like the way he gooned up Steve Holland. Fred doing his own thing and not copying
anyone at the time. Why he isn't noted as one of the top rate Book
Illustrators at the time is baffling to me..I went in Photoshop and took out the title of the
book and tried to clean it up a bit.

Pfeiffer was a genius. It is puzzling to me that his Doc Savage covers seem to be so dis-liked.
I have not located a Pfeiffer signature on this piece, but myself, Scotty Phillips, Bob Larkin and Roger Kastel all call it a Pfeiffer, and that is good enough for me!
Scotty did an incredible job in cleaning up this cover. It really looks sweet.
As always, I wish that someone had the original painting out there somewhere.
Looks like Pfeiffer art to me...everything about it, but I'm curious. There's an old publicity still in existence from the '30s showing Boris Karloff as the Frankenstein monster in exactly this pose, same tilt of the head and posture of arms. Just a coincidence?... or possible inspiration for this design? We'll never know. But, what I do know is that I like this picture very much.
I know exactly the photo of Boris you speak of, Rob. The pose does resemble it. the thing that makes me feel this could have been a Doc cover is the widows peak on the figure.
Truly a great illustration by Fred.
A Huge Thanks to Courtney for finding this lost Treasure for the Pfeiffer Pfiles.
What made me think it could have been a Doc Savage cover is the torn shirt and the physique of the figure.
Plus the timing of this book compared to when the last Pfeiffer Doc came out, and the fact that the next Doc book came out a year later and reuses an older Pfeiffer Doc cover. Hmmmm! I like it!
