Fred Pfeiffer : Doc Savage - the Mystery On the Snow - Spotlight

Fred Pfeiffer : Doc Savage - the Mystery On the Snow - 1972

by Lester Dent writing as Kenneth Robeson 1934/1972
A Doc Savage cover where we see clearly the Man of
Bronze face and features.

I like this cover because you can see clearly what Doc
looks like. We know this original is out there somewhere,
that it was painted on a sheet of masonite and that it was
found at the Bantam offices. I would love to see it in person.
I have to wonder about Fred's technique on this piece. Another
of those pieces where there was more going on than just a
brush to create the effects. Do I even need to say it's a
Favorite!?!

Fred Pfeiffer : American Primitive - Spotlight

Fred Pfeiffer : American Primitive - 1972

A Pfeiffer still life illustration.
a rare and splendid piece indeed.

I can't remember seeing Fred do this type of
illustration again. This is a rare find and Courtney
deserves a pat o the back for spotting this. I love
it and it shows that Fred could take on any cover
project and create. He was versatile and had to
be an art directors dream come true.

Fred Pfeiffer : I'll Never Be Young Again - Spotlight

Fred Pfeiffer : I'll Never Be Young Again - 1971

by Daphne du Maurier

A Charming illustration that shows some
dreamers. I love art that shows contemplation.
This cover speaks to me on that level. I wonder
what the subjects are thinking. They look more like they
are in deep thought than looking out a window to me.
I get to participate in this Illustration not only as a
possible book purchaser but as a lover of art as well.
This piece is very pretty and the girl and her dress are
beautiful. The clock must be symbolic to the title/piece as they/we all
feel time ticking by and we can never go back... a great touch to the
illustration.
I wonder if Fred used another medium on this
as the background looks like colored pencils or pastel chalk.

Fred Pfeiffer : High Encounter - Spotlight

Fred Pfeiffer : High Encounter - 1975

by Burton Wohl

Fred turns in another masterful
full cover. This almost looks like
a movie one sheet. Much to look
at here. The cover design directs the eye
to go to each element and then to
open it up.

Fred does this novel great
justice with a fabulous cover
illustration.

Masterpiece. The original must be
breath taking. Amazing cover. I
have to wonder what he used to
create the rocks. Really cool art.
One of my very favorite pieces of
art by Pfeiffer!

Fred Pfeiffer : the Favorite Game - Spotlight

Fred Pfeiffer : the Favorite Game - 1971

by Leonard Cohen

Fred made the side of Cohen's face
very interesting. I could think of
many games with her that would be
favorites....but, I digress.

Fred Pfeiffer : A Small Town In Germany - 1969

by John Le Carre
This is another Cover that has no
Pfeiffer on it, but we feel by the
art style it is Fred. If anyone has
further info on this cover please let us know.
This Dell version of the book came out in 1969

This is Scotty's magnificent oil painting rendition of Fred Pfeiffer's Doc Savage cover of Murder Mirage.

I commissioned this painting from Scotty and he certainly did not disappoint.

It proudly hangs in my living room.

Fred Pfeiffer : Doc Savage - Murder Mirage - 1972

by Lawrence Donovan / Kenneth Robeson
Fred does another moody image for the Bantam
Doc Savage Reprint series.

Another stellar image for the man of bronze.
Looking like the metallic figure that is always
ready to dish out the justice. This was a bit dark
so I brightened it up.

Steve Holland Reference Photo

From the paperback book cover Lost Pueblo
by Zane Grey a picture of the late Steve Holland.
Steve posed for many paperback book
illustrations and it's understood that he and
Fred Pfeiffer were good friends as well as
collaborators.

Since he shows up on many of
Fred's covers, I thought it might be good to
have a picture of him for those who may want to
try and spot him.

Fred Pfeiffer : Belinda - Spotlight

Fred Pfeiffer : Belinda - 1976

by Mary Loos
A masterpiece for the big, shiny Bantams that
were common from the company in the mid 70's

One of my favorites. The young lady is so lovely.
I have not read the book, but if I did, I am sure
she would be Belinda for me through out it.
I would love to see the original for this one.

The Bantam Story

The Bantam Story was a paperback put out to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Bantam Books in 1970.  A second version was updated and released for the 30th anniversary in 1975.

These books were not priced to sell to the public. Their best feature is the large list of all Bantam books in print in 1970 and in 1975.

Note the Doc Savage book The Land of Fear on the second cover at the bottom.

Thanks to Jay Ryan for scanning the front and back covers and the spine and putting them together as shown.

Fred Pfeiffer : the Breaking Point - Spotlight

Fred Pfeiffer : the Breaking Point - 1972

by Daphne du Maurier

Fred made the dress interesting with the
quilted bottom. The stream must have
great water both characters have a bottle
of it. IS that Steve Holland back there?
I think it might be.

Fred Pfeiffer : the Nature of the Beast - 1975

by Peter Menegas
Thanks to Will Errickson and his
Horror blog for this cover.
http://toomuchhorrorfiction.blogspot.com
he bought the book for it's cover and
does a nice write up about it.

I love this one. Fred did a great job of
design. Classic 70's horror. Love the flesh
color that Pfeiffer used here.
