Here is the original painting for the step-back cover that was available for sale last year.
The painting has been reversed by Scotty to match the way it was printed in the book. I am sure that the picture was flipped in order to provide the open white space to post the paperback verbiage so it can be seen when the cover was opened.
Another good example of elements common to Fred's design style...a full figure depicted at a slant and a head portrait, and he always seemed to put a large object in the distance, such as a plane, ship or building. But, he did it well. He had a very distinct and appealing style.
