I don't know whether Fred was just kidding me or not, but I remember asking him a perfectly natural question: did you ever meet a deadline by turning in something that you weren't at all satisfied with? He replied, with a chuckle and a sly smile I might add, that there were a few times when he was totally dissatisfied with what he "had" to turn in because of time constraints, but that he signed the work in a light colored paint so that it wouldn't be easy for anyone to see who painted it. Was he kidding me, or did he really do that? I have no idea. But, it's something to ponder when we see a piece by Fred that doesn't stretch to the edge of a book's cover, and which appears to be reproduced in whole.
