There are many, many things to admire about this work of art. The boat and tree relections in the water remind me of Frazetta. The person standing in the boat with a sword and armor lends a surreal presence to the swamp, as do the darkened figures in the back of the boat. I also like the tree saplings or weeds that stick up here and there.
The orange/red color of the piece is interesting and appealing to me. And Doc looks like he is fully in control, like he always is.
This is a really beautiful work of art, and Courtney beat me to it when he said "Frazetta". It does indeed instantly bring to mind the work of that particular master of fantasy art.
I agree also that the orange coloring has a strong appeal. It perfectly complements the color of Doc's torn shirt and achieves a highly effective contrast with the dark elements of this piece.
I'll bet Fred used a photo from National Geographic as inspiration for the Cypress trunks. I had subscribed myself to that publication back through most of the 70's because of being so impressed with the photography it featured, and for some odd reason it seemed they always had a photo of a Cypress tree in a swamp in every issue, or at least it seemed that way to me, and Fred DID tell me that he got a lot of inspiration from the pictures in that magazine. It was one of his favorites.
