Great cover for another author that
Fred would do illustrations for several
of his books.
Get ready for some really great covers
for the John Masters collection. Pfeiffer
really was producing some fantastic cover
art for these books. Courtney just recently
discovered these works by Fred.

This is a fantastic Pfeiffer cover on this April 1969 Ballantine book.
As usual there is alot going on. The thuggee has just strangled the girl. And he is in purple, an early Pfeiffer favorite color. In back of him is a statue of the many-armed Kali - the Goddess of Death. Palm trees, fire and smoke.
Plus the beautiful dead girl with splayed arms and legs. Look closely and you can see a line of blood from her mouth, plus blood dripping down the top of her arm to the ground, and blood also runs down her arm to her wrist and then on the ground. There is also blood down on the bottom of her dress with more on the ground.
Certainly this is a brilliant cover that makes you want to read the book.
That is a really crazy interpretation of Kali. I wonder how Pfeiffer came up with that? The hair or whatever that is on the top of the statue is interesting.
And, of course, why did the Thuggee strangle that beautiful girl? The bastard! Of course, beautiful girls help to sell books. The picture would not be as interesting if some guy had just bought it!
