Another great example of Fred's versatility...his ability to go off in a seemingly "very different" direction with the design work, yet one which also leads me to seriously wonder if this might've been a "requested" design rather than one dreamed up by Fred himself. He DID tell me once that he occasionally obliged clients (art directors? authors? other higher-ups?) by doing it their way. In fact, he even told me once that he used a design dreamed up by a girlfriend. He told her of his assignment and asked her "how would you do it?" She mentioned an idea to him and he worked it up into a painting. If only we knew which paperback cover that was. . . and who the girlfriend was.

Can't miss that Pfeiffer painting style!
A nice bold signature at the base of the neck. When the picture was smaller, it was hard to tell if it was truly a signature or not.
I would be curious who put the circles on the illustration. I am guessing it was done in the printing process, and not done on the original painting.
